The Haunting
Recently, I found myself wondering about the history behind the word haunting. Where did it come from? Why does the word itself seem to haunt us when we say it?
We’ve attached so much weight to it. Some of us even recoil at the sound, as if saying it might invite something dark.
But it wasn’t always this way.
The word goes back to the old French hanter, which simply meant to frequent, or to visit regularly. Its roots go back even further, to an old word meaning to bring home. It wasn’t until Shakespeare that the word took a turn toward ghosts, and we’ve been a little scared of it ever since.
And that, to me, feels like a loss.
Because I want to take the word back.
You see, I work with spirit guides. I am haunted by them every day, and I absolutely love it.
A Beautiful Kind of Haunting
If you don’t want to be haunted, this probably isn’t the work for you. At some point, intuitives accept the invitation. It’s like signing an invisible agreement: I was given these gifts for a reason. Let me use them well in this lifetime.
From that moment on, you live with an awareness that spirit walks with you. Not in a terrifying way, but in a steady, life-giving way.
When a client books a session, I connect with both of our guides. They form a team, and from there the conversation begins. Sometimes, the moment a client’s name is spoken, or even when they’re just considering a session, their guide arrives. They linger. They visit until their help is no longer needed.
That is haunting in its truest form. Not scary. Not sinister. Simply faithful.
Why I Welcome the Haunting
The guides who come forward are always different, just as people are different. But they have one thing in common: respect. I have boundaries, and they honor them. We meet in what I call a co-creative space, where guides and humans work together to uncover truth, direction, and purpose.
They visit regularly. They feel like home.
That is what it means to be haunted. It is transformative, sometimes mind-blowing, always unforgettable.
It lingers in the best possible way.
It is a beautiful haunting.
